Structural tuning of nonlinear terahertz metamaterials using broadside coupled split ring resonators

We present an experimental and numerical study of a terahertz metamaterial with nonlinear response that is controllable via the relative structural positioning two stacked split ring resonator arrays. The first array fabricated on n-doped GaAs substrate second vertically above using polyimide spacer layer. Due to carrier dynamics, on-resonance transmission at 0.4 THz varies in manner incident power. layer dampens this response. In samples where layers are aligned, resonance disappears total modulation decreases. restored alignment offset imposed between Structurally tunable metamaterials can therefore act as design template for devices by controlling coupling confined electric fields phenomena complex material or inclusion.
